Isaiah 55:8-9 says “For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. We all know different people at different times in our lives, and for a different period of time, and for a different purpose. The Lord saw fit in His thoughts and ways for me to know Charles Edward Yates as my Grandpop. I would say that we might have started off on the wrong foot. When I was four, Grandpop and Grandmom came to visit our family in Alaska and Grandpop said “hello Angie.” I said “my name is not Angie…it’s An – ge – la.” When I was eleven we moved to DFW and I didn’t know it at the time how grateful to the Lord I would be for the opportunity to cultivate an irreplaceable relationship with Grandpop and Grandmom. I cannot convey in words what my relationship with Grandpop was and what it means to me; but I will try. The grandparent/grandchild relationship is a unique one; Proverbs 17:6 says children’s children are a crown to the aged. Grandpop and my relationship was defined by love, grace (with the ability to quickly over-look my wrong doing), joy, laughter, spoiling, and a lot of card playing. In fact, our relationship was so close, he even let me keep score when we played cards so I would win – and that wasn’t when I was little, that was over the past several years. Whenever I spent the night with Grandpop and Grandmom, (which I tried to do often) and Grandmom and I would leave for lunch, Grandpop would want to know who was going to fix his lunch. He would say “nobody cares,” which of course was said in jest. My prayer for him was that he would know how much I did care. My love for Grandpop does not come from a familial obligation, but from the love I have received from Christ. For I have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer I that live but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith, in the Son of God who loved me and He gave Himself up for me. My new life in Christ has enabled me to love and cherish Grandpop. Whenever I scratched Grandpop’s back he would say “I’ll give you an hour to stop that.” I trust in God’s perfect timing for Grandpop’s life and death, but one more hour would be nice; one more hour to spend with Grandpop thanking the Lord for Grandpop’s service to this country, for his devotion to his family, and most of all, for his love for me.

The Yates Staycation for some and vacation for others

The first day of our stay/vacation we picked up the cousins (Evi, Zoe, Emet, Grace, Madeline - Reese goes through their names at least once a day) and Smed and Janet and went to Pappasitos of course.

6:00 a.m. getting ready for Ryder Andrew Guthrie.

Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ryder Andrew Guthrie born July 15, 2011, 8:38 a.m. 8lbs and 20-1/4". I love c-sections, they had him out in 8 minutes after starting!

Reese Turns 2!

Happy Birthday little buddy...in typical Angela fashion, Reese dragged his birthday on for a good two weeks. We had a birthday lunch with Great Grandmom and Grandpop, Aunt Vicki and Dennis, and my parents.

Ryan was actually home on Reese's birthday, so we had a small celebration then; Reese got a bike for his birthday, if you can't tell he's really excited. He had to help Ryan adjust the seat...he almost fits on it, we will give it a couple of months!

Reese also loves books and the Yates family sure does know how to find the good ones! Thanks Smed, Janet, Evi, Zoe, Emet, Gracie, and Madeline.

We also had a birthday party for Reese at the splash park. Unfortunately, the picture of him on the swing with Annaliese was the happiest part of the day for him, he was actually pretty sick.

Despite being sick, Reese still enjoyed opening presents with his buddies, Rhett and Noel.

His new puppy bubble blower he DID manage to enjoy later that evening.

Our First Trip to the Zoo

Poor Reese, we wore him out, actually I think it probably was the other way around, he wore us out, we just don't fit in the stroller.

All I can say is...I have no idea.

We are at the zoo and Reese is most excited about ducks, fish, and airplanes that fly overhead. He actually loved all of the animals but we did spend the most time feeding the Koi fish!?

Room Shuffle - making room for the new baby!

In order to get ready for the new baby (coming July 15th) we had to shuffle the rooms and furniture around a little bit. This is Reese's new BIG BOY room, he loves his bed (thanks Smed) and does a great job of staying in it.

This is his new edition to the room - his airplane. He gets so excited; every time he goes into his room he shouts "aaaiiiirrrrpppllllaaaaannnnneee."

This is the new guest room. The old guest room will be the new baby's room (so 2 rooms down, 1 to go) and Ryan's old office is the new guest room (and where the baby will sleep til he can sleep through the night and not wake up Reese...that may be never).

Easter and Ryan's Birthday

After church we had and Easter egg hunt for Ryan's birthday party (poor Ryan).

George, Mindy, and Annaliese all came for the celebration of Christ's work on the Cross, Ryan's birthday and...

sniping eggs (Reese was just too slow).

Reese hates being dirty, that includes his eggs too apparently.

George hid one in the tree and the kids were trying to jump to get them.

The C.R. Smith Museum at American Airlines

I can't tell who is having a better time at the museum at the American Airlines headquarters, Ryan or Reese.

Reese LOVED the DC-3 they have on display, it was really hard to get him away from it and...

out of it.

They have a short video in an imax theater with first class seats, it was really fun and Reese was totally into it, (after a minor melt down over wanting to run up and down the theater and jump on the seats).

Reese is pointing out Grandmom and Grandpop's name on the wall at the museum.

We actually met Grandpop and Grandmom there for lunch and toured the museum with them, it was so much fun; now I really can't tell who had the better time!

Toddler Dedication

So, we are a little behind (in life) because it is supposed to be a baby dedication, we were actually trying to hold out until Reese was 18, but Ryan happened to be home the weekend they were doing it, so it is now a toddler dedication. We are so thankful to the Lord for the amazing blessing Reese is to us and all that the Lord is revealing about Himself through this blessing. (On a side note; before Tom asked us to come down in front of the church he read Deuteronomy 7, as soon as he started reading, Reese put his fingers in his ears and started going "blah blah blah". Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come! I know he didn't know what he was doing but timing is everything). When we went down front Reese of course started hamming it up and this is him trying to hug Ryan and me at the same time, it made me laugh so I had to hide behind him until I could pull it together.

Afterward, Reese got to enjoy his first ice cream sandwich. He hates getting his hands dirty (!?!) so he would only eat it if the wrapper was on. What a funny kid.

Actually, the sonographer is 85% sure he's a boy; he wasn't the most cooperative during his photo shoot, but there is (I feel in my expert opinion) enough evidence to support the high probability of a baby brother for Reese.

There were more cooperative pictures of this group, but this one's my favorite.

We celebrated Valentine's Day early since Ryan was gone. My boys took me to The Cheesecake Factory. It was delicious of course. Reese even let me have some of his Strawberry Shortcake. We then went to Barnes and Noble to look at books, but I think we mostly just read Reese books that he already has at home. He would get really excited about those books.

Happy New Year

What better way to kick off the new year than to watch Texas Tech win a bowl game! Ryan and my mom were out of town so we watched the game with my dad; by the time we got over there he had lunch made - chips and salsa, popcorn, and coke. Total Yates Lunch, we loved it.

We also started off the new year by going back to Arizona for fun and to see the new baby. Reese is kissing Madeline.

Emet and Reese riding in an electric Lightning McQueen. They were so cute until a series of unfortunate events took place and the two boys got wedged in the car so they couldn't get out, alone in the dark, hanging half off the curb. It was really funny but sad to see these two little boys crying so hard because it was kind of scary; they were out there for a while...oops!

Gracie always looks something like this. She's pretty tough like a tomboy, but always has bling and jewelry on. We came up with a new nickname - Tough Sparkle Cookie.

Christmas Day

Christmas Morning. Reese is pretty easy to shop for, he loves balloons and Spongebob. We probably could have ended it all right then.

The cats are always eager to help open stockings.

Reese received an awesome flight jacket (with real Air Force patches on it from Poppy) and a plane you take apart and put back together with power tools from Poppy and Gmom.

Smed and I wrote a book for Grandmom and Grandpop for Christmas and this really is a look of enjoyment from Grandmom; believe it or not.

We also did a Chinese gift exchange this year with all the extended relatives and my dad actually stole this cake plate from someone to keep for himself. I was the one that brought the cake plate and had I known it was going to be that easy to shop for him, a lot of anguish could have been spared.

This picture just cracks me up; is it a glimpse of a far off future? Reese on his ride telling Annaliese what to get at the grocery store? Or is she taking out of the basket what he put in?

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve at the Guthrie's was fun. We finally had all the cousins together to get a picture. Avery is holding Reese, her brother Benjamin is in the middle and Rhett is on the end. Benjamin kept making faces for all the pictures, which didn't go over so well with G.G. (Grandma Guthrie) but it made for some funny pictures later.

Avery felt it her duty to help Reese to every snack in the house, which he was grateful for; this is the lemon tart. Avery was really sweet with Reese and wanted to make sure he was taken care of.

G.G. and Pappa found the best gift for Reese, this horse, which has been a huge hit!

Christmas Events

So our Guthrie family tradition is to go look at Christmas Lights and this year we went to Macaroni Grill before hand...this is why we can't take Reese anywhere nice. I would like to say the eating of the bread with a knife and the red bell peppers in the hair happened while we were not paying attention...but I can't.

This is how Reese looked at the lights, it was really fun until he wanted to climb out of the sun roof, so we called it a night.

Shopping with Evi and Zoe at Target.

So we went to a train park in Scottsdale for Gracie and Emet's combined birthday party. Gracie was more entertaining eating her cake than Emet since it was her 1st Birthday. We did a lot of playing and watching the train circle around the park (which was Reese's favorite part) and I guess we just wore Reese out because while we were standing in line for the train, this happened...

He missed the whole train ride and then some.

Reese managed to find the only marker without a cap.

Emet, Evi, and Zoe were tired of an undecorated tree, so they took matters into their own hands, and of course their parents were gone, so I let them.

(Those are kitchen toys a.k.a. ornaments).

Evi was helping Reese ride the tricycle, but fast forward 10 minutes and Reese thought he could do it on his own. I come outside to a crying toddler with a brown face with a streak of tears rolling down one cheek and a bruise on his forehead; he some how managed to end up face down under the trike. (Note: stream of tears below).

And of course, our obligatory stop at In-N-Out Burger.

Nothing says "Fall" like the State Fair of Texas. Reese had a really good time seeing the sights; we just went for the food. Just for future reference, must haves at the fair include, but are not limited to:

You might think Reese is pointing at something exciting at the fair, but he's really just pointing out every plane that flies overhead.

Summer Vacations - Wisconsin

Reese's first road trip...he did awesome. We needed to get the truck up to Milwaukee so we drove up and flew home.

Guthrie Road Trip tradition: eat at Cracker Barrel at the butt crack of dawn, which in Wisconsin/Illinois is 4:30; but Cracker Barrel doesn't open until 6.

Ryan's first and second cousins, or removed cousins, whatever, I don't know how it works: Scott with his super cute sons Derek, Dillon, and Donovan.

We went to a park that overlooks lake Michigan, it was amazing.

Nothing says 4th of July like setting off your own fireworks with the Amacks!

So, it's that time again already; Reese's monthly documentary. It's so much fun to see him learn new things everyday, he likes to "chase" the cats around the house (crawling of course, he thinks it's hysterical) the cats...not so much. He also has started to respond to commands or requests, sometimes it's heartbreaking because when you tell him no, he gets his feelings hurt (i think) he does the whole pouty lip and sad face thing. He also likes to make a guppy face and fish sounds, it's really funny because he only does it when you ask. He also likes to figure out ways to stand up, although his body doesn't always cooperate. Reese also likes breathe really heavy - he is practicing his Darth Vader for Halloween; he also likes to make dinosaur noises - ("rrraaaa, it's a pterodactyl") that's for you Smed! He loves to do his jumper chair to any song that has the word "jump" in it or "all the single ladies" - don't ask. I think his favorite thing to do is pretend he is on a horse, riding to the "William Tell Overture." If you stop singing it, he'll start trying to bounce on his own until you start singing again.

The Best Week of Reese's Life

This week was a celebration (I guess) of Reese's fourth month of life. Everyday, we have done something really fun and exciting. Monday was the pumpkin patch, which was a big hit as you will see in the following photos. Tuesday was Whirly Ball day, for those of you who don't know what that is, I will have a few pictures in two weeks of what that is. But for those of you who do know, you understand how much fun we must have had. It's a long story but somehow Reese (and when i say Reese, I really mean my mom and me) got to be a fill in for one of the guys at the men's whirly ball night. Wednesday was the State Fair of Texas, Thursday was Ladies Western night bunco (and Beth's house of course to play with our little friend Zoe) and of course Friday was Reese's actually 4 month day. Please enjoy as much as we have!
